Humantay Lake · Turquoise Glacial Lake · Salkantay Mountain Views · Full Day from Cusco

Humantay Lake (Laguna Humantay) is one of Peru’s most spectacular high altitude destinations. Located at approximately 4,200 m / 13,780 ft above sea level, this striking turquoise glacial lake sits beneath the towering Salkantay Mountain, which rises to 6,271 m / 20,574 ft. Its vivid color comes from fine mineral particles carried into the lake by melting glaciers.

Beyond its dramatic scenery, Humantay Lake holds deep spiritual significance for local Andean communities. The lake and surrounding mountains are considered sacred, and traditional offerings of coca leaves, flowers, and chicha remain part of local customs.

The hike to Humantay Lake is also part of the experience. Along the route, travelers encounter high Andean grasslands, mountain streams, rugged valleys, and impressive views of snow covered peaks. After the final climb, the turquoise waters of Humantay suddenly appear beneath the mountains, creating one of the most memorable landscapes near Cusco.
